What to buy
first, and
what it costs.

A trusted starting point for sourdough and fermenting, built for someone buying their first jar. We compile the published specs, price the whole setup, and tell you which of it to skip. We have not tested this equipment, and we say so.

How we pick

Everyone in this category will tell you they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any of them, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published specifications from each manufacturer’s own listing, checked those specs against the task a beginner is actually trying to do, read the care instructions, and priced a complete setup so you know what starting costs.

Most decisions in this category are settled by facts you can check — a pot’s interior diameter against a 900g boule, whether a weight fits a wide-mouth jar, whether a lid seals or vents. Answering those well beats a testing claim nobody can verify.

We accept no free products, no sponsored placements and no paid rankings. Where a retailer we earn nothing from is the better buy, we say so.
